St Mary the Virgin Rolvenden Kent was built by monks in 1220.
The baptismal 14th century hexagonal font has a strange shape and curious fins at the base has caused many witches to believe that the baptismal water in it has magical powers. So they sought to steal this water for their evil practices.
It is said that a vicar was so disturbed by this that he had secured the font with a wooden cover in the eighteenth century to stop these practices. Also he ordered Elm tree’s to be planted surrounding the Church in a complete circle, to ward of evil spirits and to protect the parishioners.
